As it turns out, Electronic Arts might not be done with Command & Conquer after all — at least that’s what a posting on the game’s support page suggests. There might still be hope for C&C, and the turnaround could be fast.
According to the support page, those who purchased The C&C Ultimate Collection with the hopes of getting early access to the Command & Conquer beta are not completely out of luck. As the page’s blurb explains, that early access “will be honored once production of this title resumes under a new studio.” The post continues with:
While it’s not a lot to go off of, it appears that Electronic Arts is looking to shift Victory Games’ work to another studio, if they haven’t already. That could mean having that studio start from scratch, or it could be co-opting the work into a new product, we don’t know at this point.
Given that fans seemed less than thrilled by Victory Games’ direction with Command & Conquer — specifically the lack of a campaign and the free-to-play approach — we wouldn’t be surprised if this new studio chose to start from scratch, but that would put the game’s release a few years out. Rather, the wording of the page leads us to believe that this new studio might simply take over development, albeit with some changes made.
At the same time, if EA was unhappy with Victory Games’ work, it’s strange to think they would want another studio to continue with their unfinished product. Maybe EA was happy with specific things, but unhappy with others — it’s all a little unclear at this point.
Whatever the case may be, the good news for Command & Conquer fans (unless EA says otherwise) is that the franchise will still see a resurgence. It may be a little further off than anticipated, so it’s a good thing RTS players know the value of patience.
