The Call of Duty franchise saw less sales with the 2014 release, Advanced Warfare, and the military shooter franchise has definitely had a bit of a fall from grace, in both sales and quality, over the last couple years. Although Advanced Warfare is still releasing DLC to keep the community busy, a pool of nostalgic Call of Duty fans would prefer to revisit one of the milestone games in the franchise’s long run: Modern Warfare 2.
A new petition on change.org calls for a re-release of the 2009 hit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The fans behind the petition claim that the original game’s servers have been ruined by hackers and that it is time the community was welcomed into the current console generation. The goal is to hit 150,000 signatures before sending the wish list off to Activision and the community is already approaching the 100,000 signature milestone. Here is the message behind put forward by the petition’s owner, Ramez Zahra:
As of this writing, the petition is at 97,855 signatures and the comments section is full of fans who would love to purchase the game on a current-gen console. But as we’ve learned in the past many times, it takes a lot more than signatures to bring a game to life.
The studio and developers behind Call of Duty have quite a bit on their plates already with the annual release schedule that the franchise follows, so it would probably take a lot of convincing to redirect resources to another project. That said, sales for Call of Duty have been somewhat declining and some would argue the franchise is in serious need of a revitalization. It may seem like a cop out to turn to a re-release to breathe fresh life into the franchise, but returning to a classic like Modern Warfare 2 would definitely catch the attention of some of the fans that have jumped ship.
Do you think Call of Duty needs to return to its modern roots with a release of Modern Warfare 2? Would you rather see the game go further into the past and return to a WWII setting? Let us know in the comments.
